Archdiocesan Multicultural Mass 2020
Cultures Gather in Spirit During COVID19
From around a thousand to about a hundred. COVID19 certainly affected many events this year, including the Archdiocesan Multicultural Mass. This year of COVID19, there was a temporary break from the usual features of past Multicultural Mass gatherings. There was an absence of the usual variety of choirs that make this yearly celebration a distinctively joyful and lively gathering of Australians from various cultural and linguistic background. Mass was not followed by the usual large-scale community sharing of food and entertainment was cancelled.
Because of social distancing measures, Multicultural Mass was made available online to enable more people to able to attend ‘in spirit’. The outcome was a wonderful and meaningful celebration of unity in diversity and faith in one God.
The staff of Multicultural Pastoral Care appreciate the generosity, cooperation and patience of cultural communities, their chaplains and leaders, Archbishop Mark Coleridge and archdiocesan agencies for assisting in making this gathering safe for everyone. Multicultural Mass is an opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and the immense possibilities that this richness brings to the life and faith of local church communities and wider societies. The Mass is held in observance of the annual World Day of Migrants and Refugees (27 September) and National Migrant and Refugee Week (21-27 September).
